Better Sustainment through Advanced Technology

UDRI's highly skilled Robotics and Lasers researchers and technicians provide technology support that enables speedy implementation into existing maintenance processes.

In a recent effort, our program managers oversaw and coordinated research and application of the F-16 Robotic Laser Coating Removal System installed at Hill Air Force Base, Utah (video below). This robotic laser technology safely and efficiently de-paints aircraft in a fraction of the time required by legacy operations and produces far less hazardous waste.

Air Force Life Cycle Management Center F-16 Robotic Laser Coating Removal System

This video shows how the system removes topcoat and primer coatings from both metallic and composite substrates on the F-16 Falcon. Benefits include improved weapon system availability, reduced environmental impact, better substrate life expectancy, increased depot throughput, and no workers exposed to hazardous waste.
